Chair, Poster and Literary Contests
The Royal Canadian Legion
West Vancouver (BC / Yukon) Branch 60
580 18th Street, West Vancouver, BC V7V 3V7

For many, many years, Branch 60 has sponsored the annual Poster and Literary Remembrance Contests which is open to all school children in West Vancouver. The Legion is offering up to $1,200.00 in monetary prizes. If you do not attend school in West Vancouver, please contact your local Legion. The youths that participate in the contests assist the Legion in one of our primary goals – fostering the tradition of Remembrance amongst Canadians.

The contests are divided into four categories:

  • Category 1 Senior – grades 10, 11, 12
  • Category 2 Intermediate – grades 7, 8 and 9
  • Category 3 Junior – grades 4, 5 and 6
  • Category 4 Primary (Poster Contest only) – grades 1, 2 and 3

Students may enter as many contests as they qualify for and all submissions will be returned to the students. Initial judging takes place at Branch 60 by a volunteer committee and those placing first in each category are then forwarded to the North Shore & Howe Sound Zone committee to compete against other Branch finalists. The first place Zone winners are then forwarded to BC / Yukon Command to be judged against other Zone winners. The winning entries at this level are forwarded to Ottawa where they are judged and the National winners declared. The names and work of all the National winners will be published. Over the years three West Vancouver students have won their categories at the National level.

The Poster Contest has two divisions – Colour and Black and White. The winning entries for the four categories (school grades) are displayed at the Canadian War Museum from 1 July – 1 May of the following year. The second place winners and any receiving an Honourable Mention are displayed in the foyer of the House of Commons during the annual Remembrance period in November.

The senior winning entries in the Literary (Essay and Poetry) Contests are also displayed at the Canadian War Museum during the same period.

The Legion also sponsors a trip to Ottawa for the Senior Winners in the four contests (two poster, essay and poetry) to attend the National Remembrance Day Service where they place a wreath on behalf of the youth of Canada. They also have an opportunity to meet and visit with the Governor General.

For further information please call Branch 60 at 604-922-3587 and leave a message for the Chair of the Poster and Literary Contests.
