Welcome and Introduction
It gives me great pleasure to be your new sports chair at Branch 60.
I would like to start by thanking Gordy Hughes, his volunteers and previous sports chairs, for the work they have done to bring us to where we are today. I intend to continue and develop the tradition. Sports is part of the fabric of this Branch and is an excellent vehicle to meet ones old acquaintances and to create new friends in a different environment.
Since this could be a big job for one person, I have divided our sports into Indoor and Outdoor. Sammy Saundh and I will be working together to develop new games / tournaments for the Branch. The success of any current or new initiative depends upon the support of the members. I am asking you all to step up to the plate, sign up and lend a hand.
My plan is to have each sport / game run by a coordinator.
This individual will form his / her own team and carry the event forward. Please click on any page in the sports drop-down box and contact the co-coordinator by phone or e-mail
(cc. Jeremy Woodham at baumschinken@gmail.com)
I will see that the information gets registered on the Legion Web Site, Branch 60, under the appropriate sport.
This year started with the Boxing Day Football Epic (OK so it was 2005!) and the write up, photos and DVD are on the Football page.
The next event is Superbowl Sunday in the lounge…a much more relaxed way to play sports! We intend to have the annual Pitch & Putt, Golf, Softball Tournaments. A Bocce Tournament and Fishing Derby will be introduced.
We need more support for the darts and cribbage teams. Some new faces would be very welcome. We would like to start bridge, dominoes, ping pong and bingo nights. If you are interested in forming a group to initiate these, or any other games, please let me know.
Let’s all have a fun and exciting year. Bring down your guests, who as a result of your invitation, may become members. Lest you forget…… The worse scenario is you may have fun ….and the best is that you are helping our Veterans
Have a good year in Branch 60 Sports!
Jeremy Woodham, Sports Chair.

Report:
The “Boxing Day Soccer Game” was a great success. Thanks to Sammy Saundh who arranged the soccer component and to Graham Kitchen who cooked the curry. We had about 36 soccer players…15 from “Branch 60” and about 20 soccer player visitors. Three games were played on shortened fields followed by a shootout. The event took place at noon in Ambleside Park and was followed by curry and drinks at the Legion. Next year I would like to see more supporters on the sidelines.
I would like each sport we put on represented on the Sports Committee. If you have a new sports event you want to bring forward, let me know and join the committee. I am looking for a leader for Lawn Bowling. All sports events are labour intensive. We would appreciate all the help we can muster, especially on the day!

FUNDRAISING FOR SPORTS EVENTS
I touched on this subject last year. As you are aware prizes attract participants!! The job of walking the streets of West Vancouver asking for donations for events ($25 gift card etc.) has fallen on FOUR people!! Given that most gifts require two visits one can see how labour intensive this is. My feeling is that there is enough work involved in organizing a sports event without having to become a fund raiser as well!!
I have made up a sign up sheet downstairs on the main notice board. Please pick out three places you visit regularly. Do not take a place already allotted. Take one letter to each of the three places you have chosen The Legion letter requesting donations in an envelope behind the bar. Hand deliver an envelope. You will have to return at a later date to remind the retailer and again to pick up the prize. We will store the prizes at the Legion and divide them up amongst the events. Your help in this regard will be very much appreciated…regard it as training for the Poppy Campaign!!
Respectfully submitted,
Jeremy Woodham, Sports Chair.
SPORTS REPORT FEBRUARY 2008

- “Branch 60” Open Darts Tournament: May

SPORTS REPORT
About 60 members turned out for Superbowl XL11 on Sunday 3rd. February. At the halftime show we had an excellent chili, made by Valerie MacGregor and cheese bread by John Silito and Jeremy Woodham. Tom Dimitroff gave out prizes. A good afternoon was had by all…especially in the last 30 secs!
On Saturday 9th. February, we hosted the Zone Darts Play downs to determine eligibility for the Provincial Darts Tournament in Sicamous. 28 darts players made up teams from Pemberton, Squamish, Lynn Valley, North Vancouver and West Vancouver Legions. David Roach did an excellent job organizing and running the tournament. Our in-house support team comprised Val MacGregor, Gordy Kennedy and Jeremy Woodham. We started with the Quads which our Branch won. This was followed by Doubles and Singles which were both won by Squamish. The sportsmanship was excellent, as was the food. A great day was had by all.
Forward Planning:
We need more volunteers to help with the running of sports events. We will need help in our kitchen for the Furry Creek Golf Tournament. I have 12 golfers from Pemberton and Lynn Valley Legions joining us for the weekend.
I need volunteers to deliver letters to local retailers asking for prizes for our events. Sign up sheet is in the lounge.
Without help all events are in jeopardy.
Respectfully submitted,
Jeremy Woodham, Sports Chair.
